Hey there is a new article in the March issue of Baseline about building infrastructure for business expansion in 2nd life.

I love 2nd Life because I'm a visual person and I like seeing the variety of people and creatures that emerge. I also love the fact that I can meet so many people from different countries so immediately and feel like the interactions are very real -- compared to a typical chat room. I think it is an amazing opportunity for people that have serious physical restrictions in real life. Certainly talking with dancers in 2nd Life that could no longer dance in real life has made that so clear to me. Most importantly I love the educational possibilities -- especially the process of building or creating machinima (movies). I never thought I would be able to build, and as of right now I'm starting to make a more simplistic version of the artwork on Broad St. called "The Beacons". This is so exciting to me that I can hardly stand it when I can't work on it! So, at this point I would consider me fully addicted and I will be really hurt if it all goes away. I can meet more artists so much faster here than I do in real life and it just feels good to conspire...especially late at night. I've heard that speech is on its way next. I'm a little concerned that it will get noisy, so I'm eager to see how Linden will handle that.

Right away the one thing that stood out was the slow upload time and it continues to be a problem for me while I am exploring.

I am just short of obsessed with SL. I love the live music and the opportunity given to these musicians to have a ready-made audience. You can develop a much closer relationship with the performers than you would ever get with them on a real stage. There is an intimacy here not seen much in RL. The value of communication with others is absolutely the most important part of SL that I have found.

There is a psychological intimacy in SL that is compressed, yet important (like smoking a cigar on while parachuting). I have been in conversations that have left me emotionally drained, yet left feeling healed or that I helped heal someone. The compression comes from the fact that you may never see this person again and that you have to say everything in a short time. There is such a freedom to express your true feelings. Perhaps because you may never see that person again. Perhaps because we are wearing the mask of an avatar. Perhaps because the person in front of us is projecting an image that they want to be instead of the image that they are. While I initially judge them based on their avatar, and they me, we quickly get past that to our true selves. Unless there are really good actors and role players in SL, most people seem to be genuine and we relate on that level.

The live performing venues are certainly of value to our performing arts students. I am not sure how the relationships and communications will help our students, but they are certainly valuable in SL. Until next time, I remain

I have actually spent quite a bit of time in 2nd Life. I have lots of landmarks saved and have 7 UArts people on my friends list. I've visited the UArts location several times (it took me awhile to figure out that it was in the sky) and went there one time when Larry Pooraka was adding the roof onto Hamilton Hall. I just went back again and it's coming along nicely. Hey, where's the Registrar's office door? :-) You can certainly build faster in 2nd life then in 1st life.

I can't remember where I was, but at one location I visited, there were flying Marios and flying saucers all around me and I almost got consumed by them. Being a movie fan, I love the Sundance area. I watched some previews there. I haven't been very sociable although I've tried to find locations were there were other people. I found a place where you could get into a hot air balloon and go to very interesting sky shows, like fireworks, etc. Unfortunately, I didn't add it as a landmark, so I haven't found it again. 2nd life is a cool experience and fun too.
