Become a New Media Consortium Member in Second Life!

The top spot to visit in Second Life dealing with education is the New Media Consortium. As they describe themselves on their website "the NMC Campus in Second Life has evolved into the largest educational presence in that virtual world, occupying the virtual equivalent of more than 500 acres. The campus is growing steadily as NMC member institutions add their efforts to ours in creating a state-of-the-art 3-D virtual laboratory for NMC member institutions and their faculty. The effort, which began in January 2006, has fostered a growing in-world community that numbers in the thousands, and supports an ongoing series of events, classes, demonstration projects, art exhibitions, learning experiences, and much much more." For more information on them please visit their website at http://www.nmc.org.
The University of the Arts is a member of the NMC. This allows all fellows that are faculty and staff to join as well. There are two ways to go about it. I strongly suggest the first because it signs you up directly with the NMC's database. The first requires your email address so that they can update you with new events that the group is hosting in Second Life.

PLEASE CHOOSE ONE METHOD.

Method One:
To access NMC Campus sims, you need to be a member of one of the NMC in world groups. For Faculty and staff, they suggest joining the NMC Members group in Second Life -- everyone interested should fill out the web form at http://sl.nmc.org/join. It will email you back the step by step instructions.

Method Two:
Once you have launched the Second Life application and have entered the world:

1. Click on the "Find" button at the bottom of the Second Life screen (this is in the Second Life application, not on any web site).
2. Open the "Groups" tab.
3. Enter the name of the group (NMC Members) and click "Search".
4. Click on the group name in the results.
5. Click the "Join Now" button on the right hand side (just above the officers listing).

Now you are a member of the NMC Members Group!

Once you have joined, then you can teleport to the NMC Campus or use this url to teleport there from any web browser: http://slurl.com/secondlife/NMC%20Campus/139/225/42

Or you can click on the "Map" button from the toolbar at the bottom of the screen. Go to the "Find Region" Bar and replace "Find Region" with "NMC Campus." Hit enter so that the buttons below are highlighted, and select "Teleport."

You'll arrive at the public entrance for the NMC Campus atop the Spohrer Center. From there, you can explore any part of the NMC Campus via the map- just right/command click on any numbered area to teleport across campus. You may want to review and print our one page Quick Reference Guide:
http://sl.nmc.org/wiki/Quick_Reference

The NMC members group is for faculty, staff, or students who work or attend classes at a member institution of the New Media Consortium (http://www.nmc.org). Membership provides access to the NMC Campus sim and helps NMC members recognize each other while in Second Life. Members of the group are asked to adhere to a code of conduct that governs the group. (For a copy of the Code of Conduct, see http://sl.nmc.org/wiki/Campus_Code).

Due to limitations on the groups and the numbers of members of groups within the Second Life environment and the large amount of interest in this project, we are encouraging active use of the environment to maintain membership in the group that provides access to the island. Avatars that have not visited the NMC Campus in the last 30 days may be dropped from the access group to make room for others who wish to visit the campus. To keep your spot secure, simply visit often -- and bring your friends!

Let's talk Hamilton Hall.

So at this point Hamilton Hall is 95% complete. Hovering above our land plot in Denso Heights, Hamilton Hall is our first step at recreating a University of the Arts environment in Second Life. Please take a minute to fly up to the structure and tour the inside. After you have taken the time in there come back to the blog and leave a comment about our new SL building.
